Chapter 3; Lost and Found

"So…" A voice, elegant, yet very sharp filled the dining hall. Where I, Jennifer Matters, sat next to Adam, after being pulled out of the kitchen by him before I could even get a taste of the cherry pie. I sat there, staring up at my enemy. Or soon-to-be enemy.

She walked around the table, her eyes on me the whole time. "This…is who you want to marry?" She asked, a sound of great disappointment

the King sat at the head of the table, he was old, but only my father's age at the least. In his mid 50s. He was a slightly plump man, and didn't look jolly.

"You, Prince Adam Isaac Warwick, can choose any princess from all over the world. Yet…" She looked down at me in disgust as if I was a cockroach who dared to crawl into the room.

"You choose this…low-class, social climbing, laundry washing, bathroom cleaner?!" She snapped, whirling around at her, son. She was scary.

The aura she gave off was vicious and dangerous. She didn't seem to mind showing off either. A low cut dress. It was a promiscuous dress, where the skirt line was long and short at the time. The back being long and the front being a shorter skirt covered what was needed to be covered. She would be a disgrace to any husband, but unfortunately she was gorgeous. Perfect blond hair, long and straight and pulled into a tight bun on her head where the crown sat on top her perfect head.

I stared back at her with an equally disgusted look upon my own face. Then I got a hard jab into my side from my husband-to-be.

I winced at the horrible pain shooting from the spot he hit, I glared at him, but he ignored me.

"Mother, I chose her. Please respect my choices."

"But…you're a Prince!" She stated as if this was an unknown fact to everyone in the room.

"I know my status, please don't bring up such a trivial subject." Adam said, calmly and cooly. He sounded very mature at that moment, which was odd since it was coming from him. I smiled a little at him and the King seemed to catch this.

"Well, my dear they seem to be quite fond of each other. Do you not think so?"

The King spoke up finally, and the Queen still stood there for some time, she paced around for a minute before, stopping and sighing. "Well since he's so reckless. Let's see how long the marriage lasts." She stated, then shrugged, before she left the room, the King stood up and walked over to me.

"Welcome to the family my dear." He said clasping my small hand in his. There was a twinkle in his blue eyes from old age, and wisps of gray hair within the blond.

Then he let go of my hand before walking away following after the Queen. I turned to Adam to speak but in a second he had grabbed my wrist and was pulling me off down the opposite hall into...

--------

Hell.

Here I was sitting on a red antique looking couch while attendants walked by holding up various wedding gowns. I sat frozen and alone as a woman on each of my sides babbled on and on about each dress. I had a glass of champagne in my hand as I stared not really paying any attention to the dresses that went by.

I sighed, they didn't notice but went on. I really did not want to be here.

"Take a look at this strapless–" I cut her off.

"I don't like the lace."

"Okay." She tossed the dress into the arms of an assistant who was running around trying to accommodate to my tastes.

"How about this off the shoulder-number."

"I don't like the color, it's off-white."

"Ah…"

They continued to show me a few dresses which I detested because the color wasn't white enough for me. They rolled their eyes. I felt offended but enjoyed making them shift through hundreds of dresses for my sake.

"Oh!" An assistant who was walking by nearby exclaimed, "Your glass is empty, let me get you a refill."

I shook my head and got up to my feet, I felt a little woozy, "No. No need at all." I started walking out of the room, "I know the way." I added as I rounded the corner, heading towards the cart where glasses of champagne and other sweets were.

As I got there I saw a figure heading towards me. In his usual walk. The sexy one. I rolled my eyes as I switched my empty glass for another. I sipped from the glass of champagne as he came to a stop.

"So, picked out a nice dress?"

"What's it to ya?" I snapped.

"It is my money, and I only want the best for my lovely bride."

"Aww, honey, that's so sweet. But it is our money."

He visibly twitched at this, obviously annoyed.

Haha! Jen:1 and Adam:0.

A smirk made it's way onto Adam's face as he came closer to my side, "Well, I would like something nice, to take off you on our honeymoon." he whispered into my ear, with a deep, rugged voice that gave me goosebumps.

My jaw dropped open and my eyes widened as I stared at the wall in front of us. Then I turned my head slowly to watch him walk away the same way he came from.

I stood there for a few moments before I snapped my head forward, downed the rest of my drink, and slammed the glass down on the tray before I stormed off back into the room.

I didn't seem to startle the awaiting attendants, who turned on me with wide grins.

"We found the perfect dress for you!" The woman who was to plan my wedding said gleefully.

They stood back away from the mannequin. I stared at the slip dress. It had an empire waist and a soft cowl neckline and thin spaghetti straps. Without a second thought I agreed.

"It's perfect!" I lied. I was sick of looking at dresses, I really could not take it any longer so I agreed and left the room as they spun it around for me to look at.

I was so angry, I really could not focus now.

I soon found myself lost, I spun around trying to figure out where I was. I sighed and just walked straight into a hall way and was soon out of it I was surprised by this turn of events. Nearby the King stood looking up at a portrait of his father and mother. I remembered them being mentioned in history books.

I walked over to him slowly, he turned his head to me and smiled gently.

"Uhm…I got lost. I hope I'm not bothering you?" I asked, nervously.

He shook his head and motioned with his hand up to the portrait. I stepped closer to look at his parents. They were both beautiful, it was painted after their wedding. The late Queen looked beautiful with a crown on her head, a smile on her face, and her hand on the King's shoulder. He looked handsome with the same tussled…blond hair that his grandsons inherited and…blue eyes.

Genetics was never my specialty. So I shook it off and looked to the King. He looked exactly like his father, or at least an older version.

The King took a small velvet box out of his pocket and turned to me. "I was going to give this to Adam." He said, "It's a ring set." he stated, opening it but keeping the contents hidden from me as he took out one ring and put the box away into his pocket.

"The engagement ring and the wedding band." He added, as he put the ring onto my finger. "This should be his job, but I wanted to see if it fit."

I looked at it and moved it around a little, "Perfect fit." I said, breathlessly.

"Oh! That's good." He said smiling, "I had it specially made for the love of my life. But before I could give it to her, she died. I really did love her. I just kept it all this time."

My face fell and I looked to the King who stood there looking down at his hands. I turned back to the ring, it had half of a diamond, surrounded by a silver lining making a shape of a heart. Or at least the top part of a heart. I stared at it for a long time. When I looked up, I gave a weak smile to the King.

"Thank you so much, it means a lot to me." I said, he smiled back and took his leave with a nod of the head.

Once his foot steps died down, I broke down into tears as I leaned against the wall beneath the portrait.

--------

I walked down another hallway after I got myself together again. I kept staring at the ring, why was there half of a diamond? It looked like it was broken off, which was strange, but not down the middle but through the center. It was odd.

I wasn't watching where I was going when my body slammed into someone else's.

"Hey!" The voice was angry, "Watch where you're going–"

I looked up to see Evan, my eyes widened in fear. What would he do to me when we were alone?

"My, my, if it isn't Cinderella," He taunted. I gulped and lowered my hand down to my side. He noticed this movement and saw the ring glinting. "That ring…" He started, and made a move towards me, I took a step back.

"Give that ring to me!" His hand shot out and grabbed onto mine. I fought to keep it and he fought to take it from me.

"No! The King gave this to me!" I yelled.

"It doesn't belong to you!" He yelled back.

"Yes it does!"

"It's supposed to be kept in the family!" He yelled, "I'm going to give that to Shana!" he stopped and let go of my hand. I yanked it back away from his reach, behind my own back. His eyes were wide, he had a wild look on his face. He turned on his heel and ran off.

What scared him?

Was it because I know of his plans for this Shana girl?

I shook my head, I was too tired to think anymore.

Finally after roaming around the huge castle for almost an hour and asking three maids, who I'd never talked to before, I made it to the room. I walked in and saw Adam at his desk with Matt standing by him.

They both turned around to face me.

I stood there for awhile, I hid my hand behind my back, I wasn't sure of how he'd take seeing the ring either.

"Where have you been?" He turned in his chair to stare at me.

"I got lost." I shrugged my shoulders.

"Try not to get lost a lot. You'll be living here for the rest of our marriage." He said, then turned to his work.

I looked at Matt who still stared at me, I smiled at him, and he turned around to look over Adam's shoulder. I frowned, and sat there with my hand hidden behind a pillow.

A few seconds later Adam got to his feet and grabbed a folder off the desk. "Get plenty of rest tonight." He told me. I frowned again and looked at the clock, only six.

"Tomorrow's our wedding." He grinned at me, and my jaw dropped open, "I want my bride fully rested." the two left the room, shutting the door carefully behind them.

I grabbed a pillow and started screaming into it.

This had to be my nightmare.
